ABOUT
ARTIST'S STATEMENT

I work primarily in drawings and installations. The drawing activity is an improvisation in which I collaborate with line and space, color and surface. The actual physical act of drawing pulls me along through the unknown into and through surprises, frustration, stuckness and elation, not necessarily in that order. I look for what needs to happen from moment to moment. I love line, depth, the mystery of black and the intermingling of opposites. The content of my work changes over time, but the initial energy is usually something of concern or of interest to me when I begin. It could be a piece of music, a couple of words from a poem, events taking place in the world, a dream image or an emotion that is particularly compelling. That said, I don’t know when I begin a drawing what it will become. I trust that clarity will come in time. Landscape, Space, Silence and Detail in all their range and ambiguity are sustaining elements in my work.
